Default August Update?

Well, its been 4 months since last big update. At that time ANet said they wanted to work on more substantial updates, so instead of giving us something every month we would be seeing a larger update every 3-4 months.

And the case against, well they haven't actually said there would be a large update in August (or infact any other time). The previous big one was pre-announced, at least partially.

We know there's 2 'issues' they are looking at, namely removing Heroes from PvP and adding a test server. No ETA on either of those or whether they will be (part of) the August update.

If anything does arrive, it will probably appear in the last week of August, as the last big update did, separate from the monthly maintenance build.

I think they are having problems with the 'test server' because they simply don't know how on earth they are going to implement it. GW uses one single server to serve it's players and sub servers (i guess) to run instances and stuff...So implementing a test server would most likely involve... Another GW game client that connects to it's own server, within that game client are the updates that are on test and you copy your characters over from the live server to the test with a command. Thats how SOE does it with eq2 so thats all i can see being done, unless anet has a better idea.

Make sure you guys have 3-4 GB of free space open on your HDD's

There is a dev server for testing purposes...why not use it?

I'm guessing that server is not hooked up to the internet and their game client isn't going to be the same as ours, I look forward to see what anet does about this, maybe they will implement it into the current client somehow. Might actually even be able to talk to some random NPC and take you to some random outpost with explorable areas or something.

Can only wait now at this point.

I think whatever "major update" they might be planning is being pushed back for a holiday release. Probably something we can buy as well so it's good timing. We will see some testing notices around september.

Still expecting some minor PvP skill updates this week aimed at mind blasters, which will send people scurrying for 1-2 months finding the next degenerate lord damage template.

It's a random set of skills that you use on your opponent.

Anyway, I hope there is a bigger update this month. I don't except an April update though.

the dev server IS hooked up to the internet. I was on the hero battles beta testing team, and there was a seperate client each member could get, their own pw emailed to them, then everyone was connected.

As for the second quarterly update, Anet is clearly in chaos and can't commit to even the most basic of maintenance and skill balances. It's really a shame because they went out of their way to convince us of this change in direction and new commitment to keeping GW alive, and they have completely fallen on their faces.

They are a month late on the july skill updates so I wouldn't expect the august update to happen until the end of the month at the earliest. Remember they've left Lindsey pretty much alone to do the updates without much support.

We desperately need more GW merch to finance the gw1 devs.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind buying a guild wars shirt about ingame jokes and such.

from all indications, the dev server actually does not completely reflect the live servers. this is probably why some updates don't quite work right, and how game breaking bugs somehow gets past the testing stages.

the other alternative is that anet is COMPLETELY incompetent. i guess either is possible.

Mad King Thorn shirt/mug/whatever with a few paragon/dwarf jokes would be a pretty epic piece of merchandise.

As for the update goes, I hope it comes and completely blows everyone's minds away. That being said, better late and properly working than early and broken, imo.

As the last one was at the end of April and it's now the start of August, it's actually been just a bit over three months since the last big update.

/nitpicky

Anyway, I'm going to agree with "better it takes longer and everything works well than rushed and broken".

That would be nice, however it is a little late to be thinking about that now since the interest in the games is now lower than it once used to be. Plus it takes money to make money so they'd have to come up with the funds to make those items somewhere.

I would imagine you would make new characters on the test server, instead of porting your existing characters. Just think, it would be like guild wars when it was first released. No one has anything crazy good, and everyone's trying to get through the campaigns, not boozing and gobbling down sweets for titles.

And forcing people to play through the entire game would aid in testing certain features how, exactly? And "crazy good?" What game are you playing; my collector shield is as good as your tormented one.
